It’s said that buying a new car is in the top three most stressful things we’ll do in life, along with buying a house and getting married.

Need A New Car?

Here Are Our 3 Top Tips For Selecting The Right Car For You And Your Situation.

Having information before you buy can be, perhaps, your best weapon. Asking yourself some seemingly obvious questions in the first place is really going to narrow down what’s going to tb right car – in a practical sense – for you and your situation.

Here are three hints, three amongst many, that may help:

1: What KIND of car do you REALLY need? Is the Lamborghini really going to suit your needs?

If it is, AWESOME! if not…. Time to get practical.

If you’re a single person and have no kids, then buying an SUV of any size may be pointless.

Some of the smaller ones that appeal to the single no kids market aren’t that much bigger than the sedan they aim to steal sales from. But for a family, a good sized SUV or people mover may be just the ticket.

2: How FAR do you drive? Is it a short distance, and mostly that’s the bulk of driving?

Do you drive for a long distance in stop/start highway traffic? As most cars now are autos, that’s one burden relieved, but if it’s a short distance then a small petrol engine will be more appropriate than a large car with a diesel engine. Diesels are best for load lugging and will choke up on constant short distance only runs after a while.

3: Do you care about the drive?  Do you want something that handles beautifully for those country roads? There’s no shame in enjoying some spirited driving, but if you do, you want to make sure the car you chose ticks that box.

If you don’t, and you’re more interested in safely getting from A to B, then that’s extremely useful information in itself that’ll help you make your decision.

4: Budget. It’s a  blindingly obvious superficial point to state that a purchase cost is important. So go beyond that and look at the servicing costs. Do a bit of quick research on what the likely aftercare costs will be.

For a popular car that’s easy to get parts for, the costs for parts and servicing are generally quite predictable.  But for a more unique or exotic car, you could be up for thousands for what may seem like a standard service call.

What might be relatively cheap for one car/brand may be far more expensive for a similar part for another. It’s all in the research.

Make a shortlist of the cars you’re interested in and put columns next to the list for things that are important to you. For example, safety rating, practicality, size, efficiency, handling ability, engine size, servicing costs, etc.. and get researching!
